Ref  FB2  18th Century Portuguese Cluster Ring

Sumptuous Portuguese cluster ring, circa 1780. The influx of gemstones from Brazil at the time led to the use of a rainbow array of colours in jewellery - combined with the Portuguese passion for extravagant display. 18th century Portuguese jewels were designed to draw the maximum amount of light and dazzle from the gemstones, especially when worn in flickering candlelight. This cluster ring is gold, set with a huge faceted amethyst within a sea-green chrysoberyl surround, the gemstones all foiled and closed back set. Typical of Portuguese jewels of the period, the gemstones are in a gold bead surround. The ring is size M [US 6] and can be sized and the head of the ring measures 1.5 inches by 1 and 1/4 inches. Fabulous ring, immaculate condition. For similar, see The National Museum of Ancient Art Jewellery Collection, Lisbon.
